I've learned a lot about myself throughout my student teaching
experience. Let me tell you about one of most memorable students
in my general education placement. I was very worried about one
student in my class who had a hard time recording his thoughts, and
scored only a 1 on his ISTEP (for the writing portion). I performed
a few observations during several math lessons when I began to get
concerned. On 4 out of 5 data days, during an 8 minute period, this
student was off-task 75% of the time (starring off, talking, etc.).
I immediately met with the resource teacher at my school and we
discussed possible ways to help him stay on task and write
effectively, such as the use of simple graphic organizers, an
on-task tally sheet, comic books, and sight word practice. It was
from then on, that every day that went by I realized how much I want
to be a Special Education teacher to better meet the specific needs
of students. In my General Education placement I taught full time
for 5 weeks, created a 3-week comprehensive unit on nutrition, and
took part in numerous collaboration meetings.
During my Resource student teaching experience, I participated in
several case conference meetings (annual IEP reviews, transitions to
Carmel Middle School), updated progress reports/report cards, and
completed an action research project that better informed me of
best-practice strategies to implement for students during transitions
when appropriate. One of my most valuable experiences in this
placement was being able to serve on a BBT (building-based-team)
committee. The BBT would consist of a multi-disciplinary team
(resource, general educators, speech/OT/PT services, administrators
and parents) that would come together to discuss and plan how to
best intervene in meeting students' needs. This committee was based
upon Response-to-Intervention.
Both of my student teaching experiences have given me the opportunity
to practice and refine my skills and experience as an educator!
